A Smoothie and a Giveaway!

Well, it is Monday.  Where in the world does the weekend go?  I hope everyone out there had a great weekend.  I was able to go outside for a run on Saturday and do one of my 13 in 2013 races.  We had quite the heat wave that day and got up to 27 degrees!  Did you run a race over the weekend?Picture

I also signed up for a new virtual 5K.  Fit, Fab, & Lean is hosting a virtual 5K or Half Marathon.  All the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.  This medal looks awesome, and it has glitter and stained glass too!

This morning I made a new smoothie.  I tried adding frozen peaches to my smoothie and it came out great!  I was a little nervous, since we were out of Greek yogurt…a staple in all my smoothies.  I’m calling it my Rainbow Smoothie, since it looked like a rainbow before I blended it up.  Isn’t it pretty?

Ingredients:

  • frozen blueberries
  • frozen diced strawberries
  • frozen banana slices
  • frozen diced peaches
  • protein powder
  • spinach
  • ground flax seed
  • skim milk

The Burpee Mile

Today I’m doing Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp workout.  Tina has really been giving us some amazing workouts this round, and I love it when I’m challenged!  I’m also adding some extra burpees in there for Rita’s Burpee Mile in the end of March.  Right now I can burpee my way across the length of our house.  I’m hoping to really increase my distance each day.

NO WATER!! A Smoothie Recipe Too!!

Well, yesterday was a ton of fun, and it looks like today is going to be the same.  We lost water in the whole little town I live in on Tuesday evening.  By Wednesday morning they couldn’t find where the break in a pipe was, so they sent out a mass call to everyone (all 300 people…maybe 200) to look in their backyard to see if they saw any water pooling.  Mind you, we all have a butt load of compact snow in our yards.  I immediately thought of that mammoth hole Tilly and Hank dug, and I ran out there to make sure they didn’t dig far enough down to damage water pipes.  Unfortunately we got a bunch of snow the night before, so I had to start digging with my hands to check things out.  Of course, this brought Hank, Tilly, and Lady to my aid.  I can only imagine what we all looked like digging through the fresh snow.  Thankfully there was no water pooling there, and their hole was pretty shallow.

Since we had been without water for over 12 hours at this point, I had to get resourceful.  I cannot believe I’m about to say this, and I will deny it later, but I’m so thankful for all the snow we have on the ground (again, never EVER mention that I said this, because I WILL deny it).  I had the pleasure of hauling buckets of snow into the house to melt, just so we could flush our toilets.  By the way…You cannot microwave snow.  It just evaporates.

Oh, and in case you were wondering…It takes 11 buckets and 45 minutes of melting the snow to flush 1 toilet.  I’m having so much fun around here!  Today starts day 2 of melting snow for toilet water on the stove!  Time to party!

Bringing snow into the house added a bit of fun to our day.  Hank and Tilly thought I was bringing the snow in the house to play with, so they would try to sneak off with one of the buckets of snow, or just eat it.  Then, since my husband and I are such mature adults, we ended up having a snowball fight in the house.  Some people in the house may tell you that I started the fight, but I really don’t see it that way Winking smile.

Wednesday is also a key laundry day for me, so I was unable to do laundry.  I’m blaming our lack of running water this week if I don’t meet my goal of catching up on laundry this year.  I won’t even get into the back log of dirty dishes we have going on right now.  It is making me twitch.

Hopefully the water will come back on sometime…I’m praying for today, but it doesn’t look likely.  In the meantime, I’m so thankful for working at the Y.  We are now showering there.

There really is no way to transition from melting snow for toilet water into a smoothie recipe, so please forgive me.  Also, I’ll have the winner of the Giveaway posted in tomorrow’s post!!!

Lately it seems like the whole country is coming down with this awful flu.  Thankfully we have not caught it yet.  I’m hoping you have not caught it yet either.  In hopes of keeping you and your family healthy, here is an Immunity Boosting Protein Smoothie recipe.  Did you know that Mangos are a great way to help boost your immunity?  They are one of the very few fruits that have vitamins A, C, and E.

Immunity Boosting Protein Smoothie

Low Fat Strawberry Lassi

Ingredients:

  • 1 c frozen mango chunks
  • 1/4 c frozen cherries
  • 1/4 c frozen blueberries
  • 6 oz Greek vanilla, mango, cherry, or blueberry yogurt (I use mango or vanilla most of the time)
  • 1 scoop of protein powder (I use vanilla or banana)
  • Skim Milk to help blend
  • 1 T ground flax seeds

Directions:

Add the frozen fruit to your blender or Magic Bullet.  Then, add milk till it almost covers the fruit.  Finally add the rest of the ingredients.  Blend and enjoy!!!

Quick Saturday Update

A couple of quick updates!

I got my new IPhone 5 yesterday!  IPhone and I sat down and had a nice conversation (all-be-it one sided) about what I wanted out of our relationship.  I told IPhone I wanted zero stress, and in return I would get IPhone an overpriced case to go in.  Thankfully IPhone had no arguments, so our relationship shall begin Smile.  Now to give my 7 year old son my cell phone so he can show me how to use the darn thing!

Power Protein Smoothie

I posted last week that I set a new goal of only having 2 cups of coffee a day.  So far I’m doing pretty well with this.  Kim @ Fabulous Fit Foodie and Christine @ Love, Life, Surf  suggested that I have a smoothie in the morning.  This was genius, and it is an easy thing for me to do.  I moved my post workout smoothie to my breakfast time.  Guess what?  It worked.  After one sip of my smoothie I didn’t want any coffee.  Go figure!  I’m quite happy with this.  Thank you Kim and Christine!  Of course, I still have my afternoon StarbucksWinking smile.

Yesterday’s Christmas Spinning class was a blast!  We all laughed and sweated away!  My favorite part was giving away the door prizes.  I had everything from Starbucks mugs to Burt Bee’s chap stick and Farkle (if you don’t own the game Farkle run to your local Target or Wal-Mart and get it).  Everyone walked out with a fun prize and a piece of fruit.

Bootie Buster Challenge

I have had such a great week when it comes to working out!

I have to give credit to Tina Reale’s Best Body Boot Camp and the Holiday Bootie Busterburpee Challenge.  These two fitness challenges have kept me motivated and happy all week.  The workouts Tina gave us this week were good.  Nothing like over 100 burpees to keep you going and feeling motivatedSmile!  I feel like I should own a t-shirt that says…”I survived the Burpee Challenge”.  My body is loving the challenge and so am I.  However, I may be saying some 4 letter words while doing themSmile.

The Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge is making working out and eating healthy more fun than it has ever been, and I must admit I’m more motivated to work out and eat healthy with this challenge.  This challenge is about keeping you motivated to stay active during the winter and holidays.  The best thing about this challenge is that you don’t even have to take classes at a gym, or even go to the gym. You can count those workout videos and other workouts you do at home too! Plus this challenge has a ton of great prizes!!

The challenge is divided into groups based on your workout levels:

  • Low Profile:5K, 10K, cardio class master (includes CrossFit)
  • Cushioned:Half marathon/marathon/distance biking
  • Stability:Half Ironman or more
  • Minimalist: Yoga/Weight lifting

You should expect to continue earning points for activity in any area,cross training, but by selecting your primary activity throughout the challenge you can be more competitive for the top points prizes.

And here is a breakdown of the points you earn…

cleaning-girl-cleanI swear I have turned into a kid when it comes to earning points.  I want to do whatever I can to earn as many points in a day as I can.  It makes me so happy to earn a point for something.  For example, those bonus cleaning points that I told you about in yesterday’s post….I was happy to clean, and I was looking forward to cleaning because I was going to earn a point for every hour I spent cleaning.  Oh how I wish I could earn points and possibly get prizes for cleaning all year round.Smile

Thanksgiving was the first day that I earned a point for eating all my fruit and veggies (5-7 servings)!!  It has been hard to get at least 5 servings a day.  Not getting any points in that category for 3 days straight really bugged me.  We always have fruits and veggies with our meals in our home, but I had no idea we were lacking several servings each day.  I posted about this on the Holiday Bootie Buster Facebook Page and received a ton of ideas from everyone.  I’m now preplanning the fruits and veggies my family will eat each day, and I’m also back to making my protein smoothies.  I cannot believe that I completely forgot about all the fruit I put in one smoothie.  So, yesterday I made myself a post workout protein smoothie, and here is the recipe!!  For all you Holiday Challenge girls this baby has a total of 3 servings of fruits/veggies!!!

Power Protein Smoothie

Power Protein Smoothie

  • 1/2 c frozen blueberries
    1/2 c frozen sliced strawberries and sliced bananas combined
    1 c baby spinach…regular would work fine too
    6 oz. Greek yogurt (you can choose the flavor or just plain)
    1 scoop protein powder
    1 T ground flax seed (optional)
    milk (enough to allow everything to blend)

Place everything in your blender and blend!  You will have a healthy protein packed smoothie for before or after your workout.
