Workout Wednesday and a Dysfunctional Relationship

Hi! My name is Andrea and I’m in a dysfunctional relationship…with my BlackBerry. We have been in this relationship for over 2 years and the last 6 months have been a strain. BlackBerry likes to act up/act out, and I sit back and take it all.  I will patiently remove the battery several times a day in attempt to regain internet access, and charge the battery several times a day.  Why you may ask?  Well, because BlackBerry has a keyboard.

Honestly, at this point there are too many problems between us.  When I took Blackberry into the cell store to see if there was anything I could do I was told no.  The college kid working was kind enough to give me a pat on the back and tell me I would be better off with the upgrade, and would have less stress in my life.

I have threatened to give up my BlackBerry many times at this point, but I always go back to it because of the keyboard. I don’t do well with typing on little touch screens, but at this point I have to end my dysfunctional relationship before one of us gets thrown out of a window (and I don’t want to have to pay for a window repair). Therefore, I’m finally breaking down and purchasing an IPhone this week. It is sad, but putting that in writing is so hard. It is going to be even harder making the switch. Wish me luck! Any IPhone owners out there? Are you happy with your relationship with your IPhone?

Every Accomplishment

Despite my break-up with BlackBerry life must go on, because it is Workout Wednesday!!!  Time to shape up that body, burn some fat, and tone those muscles.  Today I’m doing a full body workout that involves supersets.  Each superset consists of 3 exercises.  Do 2-3 sets of each super set before moving on to the next (each superset is in a blue rectangle)In between each superset is a short cardio section that equals 3 minutes.  I’ve included the links to new workout moves that you may be unsure of.  Proper form keeps you from injuries.  Remember to stretch!

A Winter Wonderland

Last nights book club meeting was a blast!  Since it was our Christmas meeting we had a book swap that involved us being able to steal books from each other, and before it was all said and done with, quite a bit of stealing went down, and there was a ton of laughing to go along with it!  I only had 2 books stolen, but I ended up with the book I started with (I stole it back!!).

The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philipp Sendker - Target Club Pick (Paperback)

I now am the proud owner of The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philipp Sendker.  I have read great reviews about this novel, and I’m looking forward to reading it.

The book we choose for our January meeting is, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, by Laura Hillenbrand.  My friend in Florida, Judy, has been insisting that I read this book for 2 years now, and it has sat in my “to read” pile for just as long, so I know it will be a good one!

Have you read either of these books?

Now on to some amazing pictures.  For as much as I hate the cold white stuff that is everywhere right now, even I have to say that we have been living in a beautiful winter wonderland for the past few days.

Each night we have “snow fog” and it leaves everything coated in white for the whole next day!  It really is gorgeous!

The above picture was taken by my friend Heather at Des Lacs Wildlife Refuge.  She is an amazing photographer.

From these pictures you can tell how cold it must be outside too!  Thankfully I had a crock pot full of pumpkin pie steel cut oats ready for me when I rolled out of bed this morning.  The house smelled great too!

As for today’s workout…I’m teaching my 60 minute spinning class, 300 Core/Ab Workout, YogaFit Yoga for Cyclists (which I did for the first time yesterday and enjoyed), and pilates in the evening.  If you are in need of a workout, check out my Workout and/or Elliptical and Treadmill workouts.  What is your workout for the day?

Thanksgiving Rocked!!!

I hope everyone out there had a great Thanksgiving yesterday!  I know I did!

As you have read, in a previous post, I hate Thanksgiving.  Well, things have changed.  Yesterday was such a fun day, and I spent 2 hours of it happily cleaning (no I have not lost my mind…at least I don’t think I have).

I got up early and headed out to teach my “Burn the Bird” 60 minute spinning class.  We had such a great turnout of people wanting to get a workout in before Thanksgiving dinner.  All of us had a good time laughing and sweating a bunch.  I’m so glad our Y decided to stay open till noon today for Thanksgiving.  This is the first year they have ever done this, and it was a hit!

Then, I headed home to the most amazing smelling home ever!  As soon as I walked in the door I was hit by the smell of the turkey and all the other food my husband and son put together for our meal.  It smelled so mouthwatering good!  Both my husband and son had set the table, and had the food all ready when I got home.

We all sat down to such an amazing meal!  I was honestly in heaven.  The turkey we brined for the first time was perfect, and we all agreed it was the best turkey we have had yet and will brine one again next year.  I can definitely recommend Williams-Sonoma’s Apple Brine, it was fabulous!  Best of all, my hubby cooked food I like too!  There were roasted root vegetables, and parmesan mashed potatoes.  All I can say is that Bill can cook every Thanksgiving from now on, because I was in heaven.  A big thank you to my husband and son for such a wonderful Thanksgiving meal!

Sadly Bill had to head off to work, so my son and I decided to watch a few favorite movies.

cleaning-girl-cleanThen, it was time for me to clean, and I was happy about this.  I guess I should explain before someone decides I need to be committed.  Right now I’m doing the Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge.  In this challenge you earn points for working out, supporting others on HBBCFacebook, eating 5-7 servings of fruits and veggies each day (which I met for the first time todaySmile), and for cleaning and cooking on Thanksgiving.  Yesterday we got 1 point for every hour we spend cleaning and cooking.  Since I didn’t cook, I figured I would clean.  I swear I’m like a little kid with these points.  I get all excited about earning points towards prizes!  So, I spent 2 hours dusting, cleaning bathrooms, doing windows, mopping, dishes, etc.  Woohooo!!

After I finished cleaning I lost in a spectacular fashion, 8 times in a row, to my son in Chutes and Ladders.  Sadly my losing streak continued straight into 3 rounds of Go Fish.  At this point my sweet little angel said to me, “Mom, you are not doing to well at these games tonight.  Maybe we should take a break.”  Even though I lost every game I had a ball playing and hanging out with my son.  Tilly did too!

I hope everyone out there had a wonderful day yesterday filled with fun and love!  Which brings me to this question for you:

What was your favorite part about yesterday’s Thanksgiving?

Old and New Goals

It has been a great week filled with great workouts, and I’m beyond thankful for those extra workouts this week.  My Best Body Bootcamp workouts kept me active all week long through the Halloween temptations.  Plus I was able to go up in weights I use during the workouts Tina created for the bootcamp too!

My goals for this week were:

1. Continue to eat a protein packed breakfast.  This was a goal I had last week and wanted to continue.  With a bigger healthy breakfast I have so much more energy throughout the day, and I have no desire to snack later on in the day.

2. Drink a butt load of water everyday.  I don’t get near the amount of water in my body that I should each day.  This has caused me to have some pretty fun headaches during the day, especially after working out.  Of course, I’m sure that non-fat latte from Starbucks isn’t helping either, but that is not something I’m ready to give up yet.  Keeping with this goal this whole week has caused those oh-so-fun headaches to go away completely!!

As for this upcoming week…I’m beyond excited!!!  Tina sent out our Best Body Bootcamp workouts for next week the other day, and they look awesome!!  She is using ladders for one set of workouts, and I couldn’t be happier.  Ladders and pyramids are my favorite types of workouts to do.  They really help you push yourself even farther.  For those of you who do not know what “ladders” are, they are when you have an exercise and do 6 reps, 7 reps, 8 reps, and so on until you reach 10-12 reps.  You are doing these for the same exercise all at once.  Talk about a workout huh!  Just think of all those happy endorphins you will be creating while doing that workout.

It is time for me to come up with new goals for this next week, and here is what I’ve come up with:

1. Continue eating a protein packed breakfast.  I know it seems odd to continue this goal for 3 weeks in a row, but I have to.  If I don’t, I know I will fall off the “band wagon” the first busy morning I have, and then it will all go downhill from their.  Therefore, I’m sticking with this one for awhile.

2.  Spend 20 minutes a day stretching or doing yoga.  I’m now in that wonderful age group where you really need to stretch or you will wake up in the morning moaning about your muscles aching.  This wonderful soreness is due to the fact that I don’t stretch anywhere near the amount I should.  The only time I actually get a good stretch in is if I’m teaching a class.  Then, I get a wonderful full body stretch in.  However, after my classes I head over to the weight room to workout more, and don’t stretch enough after that workout.  Therefore, it is time for me to make this a goal, and save my body in the process.  The last thing I need is an injury.

So, do you have any new goals for yourself this week or month?  If so, what are they?

Pre-Halloween Workout

I’m so excited for today!!!!  This morning I taught my Pre-Halloween Spinning class at the Y.  I love Halloween, and everything that goes with it!  This year my class does not fall on the day of Halloween…will that stop me from getting my Halloween cycle party on?  I think not!!  So, we did a Pre-Halloween ride instead.  I put together a fun ride and a ton of goodies to go along with it.  Did I mention that everyone got glow-in-the-dark bracelets and necklaces!?!  Oh…and there were door prizes too!

Halloween Spin 3

I broke out my LED light up tutu for the class too!!  By the way…That skeleton really wanted a kiss!

The door prizes were a bit on the unhealthy side, but it is Halloween.  Sometimes you just gotta let go!  However, there were some door prizes that did not involve sugar to choose from tooSmile.

We had a great ride too!  It was a bit different.  I used theme songs from Halloween type sitcoms for our recoveries.  Everyone was singing along before long!

Stability Ball Workout #2

Today is another wonderfully chilly day in North Dakota with snow still on the ground from yesterday; however, it is nowhere near as bad as it was 2 years ago when we moved here.  See the picture below?  That was Oct 27, 2010.  Need I say more?  And, those are not Christmas lights on the deck, they are Halloween lights!!

Thankfully I’m not staring at that this morning!

Today I wanted to work on some more exercises on the stability ball.  I love the way I can work my core during the whole workout and these are some of my favorite moves that I’ve been doing for years.  Below is the workout I did.  I ended up doing 4 sets of each circuit…I also had 3 cups of coffee this morning.  In case you are unsure of how to do an exercise, I have included links (below) to examples of each exercise.  After my workout, I pulled out one of my trusty yoga videos.  My muscles are pretty tight from this week, and I need to get a really good stretch in.

The scorpion is a favorite.  We did it in our first circuit with Best Body Bootcamp, and I just had to share it with ya!  I haven’t done the scorpion in quite a few years, so it was “fun” to get back into that exercise againWinking smile.  Remember to stretch when your finished!!

A Freakishly Good Workout

Bad news everyone!  It is freaking snowing and sticking to the ground here in good old ND this morning.  Needless to say, I’m not a happy camper and a few 4-letter words have been coming out of my mouth.  The good news is that Hank and Tilly are outside playing and living it up in the snow.  Lady and I (being the Florida girls that we are) are inside grumbling, so I decided to create some happy endorphins and workout.  Even though it is snowing outside, I thought I would go with a Halloween theme since the rest of the country is enjoying their fall weather!  After I finished this workout, I followed it up with my Ab-tastic 30 Workout.

Next up…crock-pot applesauce!  That should warm me up a bit!

A Freakishly Good Workout

Apple Cinnamon Scones

I absolutely love scones!  The best part is that you can make them whatever flavor you want!  My grandmother left me with a wonderful scone recipe that I have used as a base for all my other scone recipes including this one.  I have been making scones for eons now, and I am always making these apple cinnamon scones.  Since we have a ton of apples from all our trees, I decided it was time to make some of these wonderful scones for breakfast.  This recipe will make 9-12 scones depending on their size.

  • 2 cups flour
  • heaping 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup butter…cubed and chilled
  • 1 large apple…peeled, cored and diced or shredded (2 apples if they are small)
  • 1/2 c plus 1-4 T of milk
  • turbinado sugar for sprinkling

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.  Measure flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt into a large bowl.  Mix dry ingredients well.  Add cubed and chilled butter to the dry ingredients.  Cut in butter with pastry cutter, fork, or your hands.  Add the apple(s) and 1/2 cup of milk.  Now, everyone likes their scones a certain way.  If you like flaky scones you will want to have a dryer dough.  If you like moist almost “cake like” scones add more milk till you get a sticky dough.  Measure 1/4 cup of dough onto a greased baking sheet (I use a 1/4 cup measuring cup), or divide into a scone pan (see picture below).  Gently pat down the rounded scoops of dough.  Then, sprinkle turbinado sugar on top of each scone.  Bake at 425 for 12-15 minutes.  Makes 9-12 scones depending on size.

Measure flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt into a large bowl. Mix dry ingredients well.   Add cubed and chilled butter to the dry ingredients.

Cut in butter with pastry cutter, fork, or your hands.

Peel, cut, and/or shred your apple (s).  I had to use two apples since they were smaller.

Add the apple(s) and 1/2 cup of milk. Now, everyone likes their scones a certain way. If you like flaky scones you will want to have a dryer dough. If you like moist almost “cake like” scones add more milk till you get a sticky dough.

Here is a picture of what my “sticky” dough looks like.

Measure 1/4 cup of dough onto a greased baking sheet (I use a 1/4 cup measuring cup)

If you have a scone pan go ahead and use it.  This is what mine looks like, but I didn’t use it this time.

Gently pat down the rounded scoops of dough. Then, sprinkle turbinado sugar on top of each scone.

Bake at 425 for 12-15 minutes.  I baked mine for 13 minutes.  Remove from oven and place on cooling rack.  Scones are best when they are warm, so dig in!!!

6-Pack Ab Workout!

Well, fall/winter (lows in the teens) is here.  I’m not really all that excited about it since I love warm weather, but with fall comes heartwarming foods.  I have spent quite a bit of time in my kitchen baking the past few days.  I’m breaking out old recipes and creating new ones that use apples and pumpkin.  We have a ton of both ingredients.  With all this baking comes eating, or as I like to call it “taste testing,” and the taste testing has gotten a bit out of hand.  Like most women, what I eat loves to settle in my abdominal and thigh area.  So, this morning (before the baking begins yet again) I did some cardio and worked my abs pretty good with this 6-Pack Ab Workout.  I always go to these ab exercises when I fear the worst for my abdominal area.  This workout targets your oblique abs a bunch and will help those muscles pop!  If you are a beginner to working out, you may only want to do 2-3 sets of these exercises.  Remember to stretch afterwards!

Carolyn’s Ride

This is a quick 30 minute ride.  This ride was originally a song list I put together for my wonderful friend Carolyn who taught a 30 minute Express Ride at my gym in Florida.  I’ve taken out Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” and put in Rihanna’s “Cheers.”

This will be what I will be teaching at my 12:15pm Cycle Express class today.  Then I will get in some quick weights and do my Biceps and Triceps Workout.
