Oscar Style

What an amazing night for fashion and film at last nights Oscars!  I had a wonderful time crashing on the couch, eating chocolate cake (copious amounts) and watching the preshow for fashion and then the actual Oscars.  And boy were both shows great!

Seth McFarlane did a good job hosting.  I have to admit that I was laughing pretty hard at his whole “We Saw Your Boobs” song.  I actually still have the song stuck in my head.

Big congratulations to all the winners!  Although I do have to say that Ben Affleck may want to work on his acceptance speeches with his wife before he gives them.  I’m guessing that he didn’t mean to say that their marriage is work.  Poor guy was really nervous.

On to the fashion for the evening!

I’m someone who has zero fashion sense.  After all, I live out of my workout clothing.  That speaks volumes for itself.  However, I love watching all the women in their gowns, and choose which one I like the most.  And here are my nominees:

anne hathaway oscar dress 2013          anne hathaway oscar dress 2013

Anne Hathaway in Prada.  Did you notice her gorgeous Tiffany necklace? This whole dress was just amazing.  I wish I had an excuse to wear one like it.

161315075TM00439_85th_Annua  Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts in an amazing custom Armani gown in gunmetal gray.  I love how unique her dress is!

charlize theron hair

Charlize Theron was stunning in her Dior gown and an arm full of diamonds to die for!  Most of all, I love how she is rocking her new pixie cut.  Love it!

As for dresses I didn’t like:

jennifer aniston oscar dress 2013  jennifer aniston justin theroux oscars 2013

Jennifer Aniston in Valentino. I’m sorry, but I expect more from her in fashion, and her hair needed to be up, and maybe she should have added a necklace.

halle berry oscar dress 2013

Halle Berry…Sorry…I just could not get into her Versace gown.  It looked like something out of the 80s.  I know I’m probably the only person who didn’t like her dress.  Halle does have one rockin’ bod to pull this dress off and hug her in just the right ways.  I’ll give her credit for that.

What was your favorite dress of the night?

The Love 4 Logan Foundation was created to inform the public of childhood cancer while generating revenue to purchase baby blankets, mobiles, and other items for babies in the NICU and those babies diagnosed with cancer. Through the foundation we are able to express our gratitude to those that helped our baby by helping other babies.

Right now there is a need for blankets.

Per Kortney: Hey friends & family! I am trying to get NEW FLUFFY (no thin flannel or receiving blanket) blankets together to send to Logan’s family to donate. PLEASE let me know if you would like to donate. These blankets can also be HANDMADE, but same rules, must be a warm, fluffy blanket. I found perfect ones on Amazon and they don’t cost much, but mean a lot to the families they are being donated to!

I am hoping for a few handmade blankets to donate to the children’s hospital where Logan was cared for. If you know how to knit or crochet I would be willing to donate the yarn! The blankets should be about 30×45, fluffy & warm. They would need to be ready in the next few weeks. Thank you!

If you would like to help with this amazing cause and/or if you know how to crochet or knit…or know someone else who does, please get in touch with Kortney at photoburpee@yahoo.com and use the subject line “Love for Logan” as soon as possible. Please share this with anyone and everyone!!

You can continue to follow Baby Logan’s journey on her Facebook page at Love for Logan. And most importantly, please continue to keep Baby Logan, her brother and her mommy and daddy and all babies affected by cancer in your thoughts and prayers.

Operation Cookie Drop

I know after yesterday’s post many of you are curious as to how “operation cookie” drop went.  Well…It was a smashing success!!  Only 2 people swore at me when they saw me dropping off the cookies, and then swore at me a bit more while they were eating the cookies.  I consider that a major success (I know what you are thinking…no I don’t feel guilty, and yes I notice the hypocrisy), and I didn’t eat a single Girl Scout cookie. I even got a bit carried away with the whole “running from Girl Scouts” theme, and told my classes that the Girl Scouts were chasing us while we were doing our sprints in Spinning, and they were trying to make us eat their cookies.  Everyone laughed at this quite a bit, and it helped keep their minds off of all the sprints I was making them do in our Killer Ladders class.

I do have one small problem on the cookie front still…I have to go back to the grocery store tomorrow afternoon to get some more fresh produce and milk.  However, I have my fail safe plan all ready for execution.  This time I will go out the other exit where the Girl Scouts are not at.  How is that for pure genius!?!  Don’t you wish you had my brains?  Although, heaven help me if they are at both exits next time.  Those girls can be pretty crafty little buggers.  After all, they get merit badges for crafts!

The American Heiress

Now to go from cookies to our book club meeting.  We read the The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin.  Most of our group found the book a bit predictable, monotonous, and farfetched.  If you are reading this Ms. Goodwin, I’m so sorry.  I don’t like writing anything negative about books.  I read this book last summer, and I found it to be a nice light read.  We then discussed the fashion, food, and culture of the late 1800s, which is the time period the book was set in.

strawberries

Our hosts made the theme for the evening “indulgence,” so while we were discussing the book, we ate some gorgeous and delicious chocolate covered strawberries.  Fruit and chocolate?…I don’t see how this can be bad!  Then, after our discussion we had chocolates, specialty cheeses, designer crackers, and chocolate cake from heaven.  There were also magazine door prizes to go along with the whole fashion theme in the book and tourist magazines for England.  Sorry I don’t have more pictures for you of the wonderful food, but I had to leave early when my son and husband called saying they were stuck in the snow.

The Dovekeepers

Next month we are reading The Dove Keepers by Alice Hoffman.  Now, I’ll be honest.  I started this book last year, got stuck and set it down on page 82, and I haven’t picked it back up since.  Has anyone read this book?  Opinions?

Don’t forget to enter the GIVEAWAY I have going on for an autographed copy of The Fault in our Stars by John Green!  I could not put this book down once I started it!!

What is the most romantic Valentines Day you have ever had?

1553__620x540_4qje3

I found this little saying on Pinterest a few months ago, and I had to share it with you.  I know it is a bit crude, but it is just too funny not to share.  Plus it is very true.Devil

Since my mind is in the gutter today, I might as well go all the way and just stick with butts.  When I think of a body part to go along with Valentine’s Day I think of butts. Don’t ask me why, I just do. Chalk it up to me living in North Dakota for a few years. It really is getting to me.  Therefore, today’s workout is all about getting that tight bootie!

Here is a butt workout that will help you get that rock solid and round bootie!  Remember to stretch when you are done!

Back in North Dakota

Well folks, I’m back in freezing cold North Dakota.  I got home at 2 am on Monday morning.  A blizzard in Minnesota delayed my flights, but thankfully, I didn’t have any cancelations to deal with.

Florida 2011 044

Leaving Florida and coming back to North Dakota is always hard for me.  Every time I say good-bye to my friends and drive off to the airport I always start tearing up.  All those times I’m always thinking that I just cannot handle going back to North Dakota and my life there.  This time things were different.

As I was pulling away from my friend Kim’s house I didn’t break down in tears like I usually do (honestly happens every time).  Instead, I started thinking about my friends and coworkers at the gym.  I was actually looking forward to going back to North Dakota to see them and get back to teaching Spinning.  Plus I wanted to share what I learned about aerial yoga with them.

When I got up Tuesday morning I was so excited to go to work and see everyone, and sure enough they were all there welcoming me back with smiles and questions about my trip.  I cannot thank everyone I work with enough.  I think Rita said it the best when I was talking to her about this while working out…”We are all here for each other and we are each other’s support system.”

friends

So a special thank you to Andrea, Rita, Margel, Sandy, Alina, Joyce, my wonderful students, so many others that I work with at the Y, and even Leo (I know the man will smile one of these days).  You have made North Dakota…dare I say it…start feeling like a home to me.  Y’all have given me more than I can every give you in return.

Workout Wednesday 2

Alright, enough of me being sentimental and time for Workout Wednesday.  Today I have the treadmill workout I did on Tuesday.  I was pretty tired from all of my traveling yesterday and I didn’t want to run or jog before teaching my cycling class.  Instead, I walked on the treadmill with some fun hills thrown it to burn some fat off of my bootie.  I hope you have as much fun on these hills as I did.

Aerial Yoga

I will start off this post with a disclaimer…Once you go aerial you can’t go back!

IMG_0157  IMG_0158

Aerial yoga brought a whole new dimension to my workouts, and I honestly cannot imagine my fitness routine without it.  Aerial yoga brings you so much in one class.  You get to stretch, balance, strength train, and more.  I cannot wait to continue my own study of aerial yoga and progress even farther.

photo

I arrived at Yoga Girls Studio in Edgewater, Florida last Friday beyond excited to start learning more from Allison Sipes.  I had my notebook and camera ready to take more step-by-step pictures.

aerial allison

We started with a basic one hour class.  I loved all the different types of stretching and warm-up flows we did in the beginning of class.  It really helped stretch my body out from Thursday’s aerial silks workout.  We worked on transitioning from the silks into a regular yoga flow on the mat along with some amazing balancing moves using the hammock.

Spiderman   IMG_0054  IMG_0053

From there Allison went on to teach me other flows and more intermediate stretching and strength work using the hammock.  The “Spiderman” is a favorite of mine for stretching.  It felt so unbelievably good.

IMG_0123  IMG_0124   IMG_0125

The more interesting flow I did was the “diaper wrap.”  With this flow you get to go up pretty high in the hammock (which I loved!!) and progress through a series of stretching and strengthening poses.  The above pictures are only a few of the moves in the flow we did involving the “diaper wrap.”

IMG_0044  IMG_0045

One of my many favorite things about aerial yoga is the amount of core work you do in class.  The whole time you are using your core to stabilize yourself, and then there are so many different moves and/or flows that you can do that work your core even more.  My favorite was skyward dog and scorpion.  Not to mention the hundreds of other moves we did on Friday that worked my core in such a fantastic way.

IMG_0129  IMG_0128

One of the more challenging moves for me was to go from a pike into the stretch you see above.  It really worked every muscle in my body.

I loved my days with Allison learning silks and all that you can do with them!  I learned so many flows, cuing, finding your center, spotting, and more.  Now to hit my own hammock and continue learning and practicing.

Aerial yoga can be for everyone!  Although it would really help if you had done regular yoga, so that you are accustomed to the moves you will be making.  The best part are the inversions and balancing moves that use the hammock.  So many people have a hard time with handstands and such in yoga classes, and the hammock gives you excellent support while allowing you to still reap the stretching and muscular benefits.

The video above is one that I found on YouTube that is a great example of some of the moves you would do in a aerial yoga class.  I highly recommend that you sign up for a beginner class today and give it a try.  If you are in Central Florida, head over to Yoga Girls Studio and sign up for one of Allison’s classes or a private lesson.  Allison is an amazing instructor and mentor, who will be there to help you with all of your fitness goals.

A Girl’s Dream Comes True

One of the things I love most about fitness is that there are always new goals to be met and new feats to be accomplished.  I met one of my lifetime goals yesterday!  I got to try aerial silks, and I have an all new set of goals now that I’ve tried silks.

IMG_0028

Ever since I was a girl I’ve wanted try silks, and I had the time of my life fulfilling that dream.  Allison was such an amazing instructor.  She answered all of the questions I had, and she gave me even more information that I didn’t even think to ask about.  She truly is gifted when it comes to teaching others.

IMG_0003

We started off class by learning how to stretch and strength train using the silks.  Then, we moved on to learning basic lifts and how to properly wrap your arms in the silks.  After that came my favorite part…learning how to do a basic inversion (getting upside down)!

IMG_0036

Getting into an inversion requires core and upper body strength.  I had to have a bit of help from Allison getting into some inversions.  Once I was in the inversion I was able to move around with ease.  From there I learned how to properly wrap my foot in the silks, climb, and do more intermediate inversions.

IMG_0037Here I am doing the “Mermaid”.

IMG_0034

Allison then taught me how to stand and work in the silks.  It takes a good amount of core strength, and squeezing those butt cheeks together to keep yourself still while in the silks.  I swear I got the best butt and core workout ever today!  Not to mention all the upper body and leg muscles that I used.  If you are looking for a fun way to build and tone those muscles (and burn a ton of calories) this is it!

IMG_0039

Later on in my lesson, Allison tied the silks into a slip knot, and I learned how to do inversions and stretching.  The above picture is getting blown up and framed, and I’m sure it will be a picture that I show my grandkids someday!

IMG_0043

I truly cannot put into words what an amazing time I had with Allison fulfilling a dream and creating new goals today.  I wish I was a better writer, so that I could better express and explain my day to you.  If you are ever in Orlando, Florida or if you live there or near there sign up for classes or a private lesson with Allison today.  She teaches out of several studios (Vixen Fitness, Allure, and Yoga Girls) and she would love to teach you.  Allison is also adding more instructional videos to her website, and she will be adding more flexibility and strength videos soon!!

When Allison and I finished up for the day, I headed straight to dinner with my parents.  I knew that if I went back to the hotel to clean up and change I would end up laying down and not getting back up, and I was too hungry for that to happen.

mall

We met up at the Cheesecake Factory at the Mall of Millennia

lettuce wraps

I was looking forward to getting my Thai Chicken Linguine with Peanut Sauce, but this dish was no longer on the menu.  Since I was craving chicken and peanut sauce I ordered the Thai Lettuce Wraps from the Appetizer menu.  As you can see it really is more of a full meal in size.  The dish came with satay chicken strips, carrots, bean sprouts, coconut curry noodles and lettuce leaves with three delicious spicy Thai sauces – peanut, sweet red chili and tamarind-cashew.  The chicken was perfectly grilled and the peanut sauce hit the spot.  Plus I had a ton of fun creating my wraps.

salad and pasta

My step-mom ordered the Santa Fe Salad, and my dad ordered the Shrimp with Angel Hair (he always orders this dish).  Sadly, we were all too full to have any cheesecake for desert.

Today I’m headed over to Yoga Girls to work on aerial yoga with Allison.  I’m a bit sore from yesterday, but I know I’ll get in some great stretching today!

I’m On My Way!!

As you are sitting there reading this post I’m flying to Florida, and if you are reading this post after 2:30 pm EST I’ll already be in Florida hugging the first palm tree I see!  It should be gorgeous, sunny, and 80 degrees when I land.  Try not to be too jealous.  I’m sending warm thoughts your way. Smile

I’m beyond excited for my next few days in Florida, but the feeling of guilt is starting to creep over me.  I have not gone anywhere on a trip for myself in 9 years.  I have always gone to Florida with my son the past few summers since we moved to North Dakota.  The amazing thing is, my son is totally fine with me going to Florida without him this time.  He is more focused on making his own plans for while I’m gone.  All I can say is that he is a better person than I am, because I would be throwing the mother of all temper tantrums if our rolls were reversed.

Still I feel a bit guilty leaving my husband and son behind while I head off to see friends, family, and learn aerial yoga and silks.  Honestly, it is bugging me that I feel this way.  My husband heads off for hunting trips all the time, and everything is great while he is gone and when he returns we are all happy (he never has an inkling of guilt before leaving).  So why is it I’m starting to feel guilty?  I know a few of my friends feel this way as mothers too.    Do any of you have these feelings when you are about to leave for a trip and leave your husband and/or children behind?

Alright, I’ll stop prattling on about guilt and be thankful that I’m getting to go to Florida, so we can get to Workout Wednesday.

Workout Wednesday 2

Here is a 30 minute elliptical workout I found in one of my old fitness notebooks from 2007!  I love going through my old workouts and reviving them or tweaking them a bit to make them new!  Sorry about all the pink.  I kinda got carried away with the Valentines theme.  Hope you have a great Workout Wednesday, and remember to stretch when you are done!

Workout Wednesday 2

It is Workout Wednesday, so it is time to get our workout on!  This is based off of an old CrossFit workout of the day that I have done in the past.  Well, the running part is.  The original workout was to run for 1/2 mile, 75 sit-ups, 50 kettlebells, and 50 squats.  I’ve added a link to an example of the lunges with shoulder press.  Remember to stretch when you are done!
